This biodesign study considers the potential of urban dog waste, which is a source of pollution that poses threats to human and environmental health. With few sustainable solutions available, the team created The DoGreen Project, a systematic, bio-based solution to waste management in urban dog parks.

The cycle starts as the dog owner disposes of a biodegradable bag of waste in the customized bin. The bag and dog waste then enter an anaerobic digestion chamber, where methane is produced in the oxygen-starved environment, and is captured and burned to generate electricity.  Batteries store the electricity, providing power to an onsite microfarm where microgreens are grown and harvested. The sludge produced in this process is turned into biofertilizers for our park’s landscaping needs.

The microfarm’s produce is sold on site, in the park, providing a source of revenue to support maintenance. By visualizing the impact of the transformed dog waste, visitors are informed of the importance and benefits of scoop-the-poop.

The DoGreen Project promotes collective action in waste management. The project provides people with a unique bio-solution that becomes a center for disposal, regeneration, education, and community engagement.
